The future's bright. The future's orange. Well, it is according to Pantone anyway. The Pantone Color Institute have announced 17-1463 TPX Tangerine Tango as the official colour of the year for 2012. According to Pantone, bright orange will be the most fashionable colour in 2012, for clothes and accessories that is, not skin. Apparently instead of stressing over the state of the economy, we'll be donning bright orange coats, dresses, shoes and handbags in an attempt to banish the new year blues.
Executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, Leatrice Eiseman commented :“Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”
Tangerine Tango for 2012 is not a random or whimsical choice. Pantone's annual forecast is based on what the institute believes consumers want and need and is influenced by SS12 catwalk shows, news stories and popular culture. One designer referenced is Nanette Lepore.

Eiseman explained: “Part of what we do is look at the zeitgeist. We have to look at everything in the world around us. It's not an arbitrary choice.”
In contrast to last year's hot pink Honeysuckle, which was meant to promote cheer and nostalgia, this year's bright orange is said to be associated with urgency and action. “Consumers look to spring for renewed energy, optimism and the promise of a brighter day.”
Along with Tangerine Tango Pantone also predicts Solar Power (bright yellow), Bellflower (lilac) Caberet (Rosy red), Sodalite Blue (navy), Cockatoo (blue-green), Sweet Lilac (blossom pink) and Margarita (lime green) to be the most popular colours for SS12.
